“My heart leapt out of my chest when Aldwin said Freyne’s name,” Aislin whispered as she nudged Alyson, who sat between her and Leannan.

Alyson finished chewing a piece of carrot from her stew and nodded. “Aye, mine as well. To think that he was here, just hours earlier. I wonder where he is now. I miss him terribly.” She put her soup bowl back down on the table slowly with a sigh and looked down into its steaming depths.

Leannan put her arm around her twin’s shoulder. “Alyson, he clearly loves you. He gave up his place in the Otherworld for you! He gave up hundreds of summers of his life, just to grow old with you in this world. How romantic,” Leannan said with a sigh. “Papa will change his mind, Alyson. I would wager he already has and is only too stubborn to say so.”

Alyson looked up through her veil of lashes to sneak a glance at her brooding father. He was in deep conversation with her uncles, but she knew he was missing their mother. And she also knew that he felt bad for his reaction toward Freyne. She laughed under her breath. “If Mama keeps ignoring him as she has, and avoiding his bed, I bet Father will cave soon. He cannot be without Mama.”

Aislin groaned and sipped on the broth from her stew, steam creeping up her face as she tilted the bowl to her lips. “Our parents are disgusting, the lot of them,” she said dryly as she swallowed. “Cannot keep their hands off each other. My parents are the worst. At least yours try to hide it!” She grumbled again and put her bowl down.

“Ours do try,” Leannan shrugged, “but not very well. As if we do not know what Mama does to Papa under the table at meal time.” She shuddered dramatically, making Alyson laugh out loud for the first time in two days, almost spitting out her stew.

“Or their loud lovemaking. Tis disgusting,” Alyson added. “Nay worse than Treasa, though. How horrified I was when I overheard them!” The memory came rushing back to her vividly and a rosy blush overcame her cheeks as she thought about Freyne. Perhaps she felt more curious than disgusted, though she refused to openly admit it.

“I think Mama is angry at his objection to you marrying a faery. After all, she and their children share the blood of Dana. How can he accept her, but not Freyne? Mama is scary when she yells, but her silence is downright frightening,” Leannan whispered looking over at her mother, who kept sending angry looks over to their father. “When Mama is mad at Papa, she always wins. He cannot stand it.” While Alyson did not like the thought of her parents fighting because of her, it did bring her hope that her father would change his mind soon. If he did not fully accept it, at least he would hopefully stop fighting it.

Once the evening meal was finished and the table was cleared, everyone dispersed and found their own activities.
